Discernment Matters
The choices of a lifetime

HOW DO WE GET OUT OF THIS MESS?

Our theology views the human being as a lost soul from way back. You and I are lost for reasons rooted in the deep past—choices others made that we’re picking up the tab for, say. Observation suggests that, were those choices ours to make, we’d botched them just the same. Decisions made daily are proof positive that we’re still placing a lot of bad bets that someone else will pay for down the line.

That’s the science of sin in a nutshell. Of course, in any scenario involving lost items, there’s a need for someone to go find them. Cue salvation history.

Although the lost-and-found redemption narrative is often reduced to an ultimatum to save one’s soulthat is, your souland yours alone. Biblical theology recommends another route. In choosing to take up residence with the tribes of Israel, God enters into the "life and history of a people,” Pope Francis notes. “That is why no one is saved alone, as an isolated individual” (Gaudete et Exsultate, 6).

Polishing your personal piety, as tempting as it is, leads more often to pride than spiritual perfection. We human beings got into this mess together. The way out is also a communal project. We can start by breaking bread together.

National Vocation Awareness Week (Nov. 3-9, 2019)

Chicago-area members of Communicators for Women Religious (CWR) invite you to the inaugural Meet Our Sisters Tour, a collaborative event during National Vocation Awareness Week to raise awareness of the vast presence of Catholic sisters who live and serve in Chicagoland.

The self-guided tour is open to anyone who wants to learn more about how to build a culture of vocation in our world today and to develop a better understanding of religious life.

This year’s participants are Giving Voice, School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Congregation of St. Joseph, Sisters of St. Francis, Adrian Dominican Sisters, Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Benedictine Sisters of Chicago, Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, and Wheaton Franciscans. Each participating congregation, community, and ministry has set hours on specific days for you to drop by to meet a sister and learn more about how Catholic sisters continue to be a presence in the lives of so many people.

For more information, please email MeetOurSistersTour@gmail.com.
