The choices of a lifetime
THERE'S NO COOKIE CUTTER FOR HOLINESS
A friend discovered in midlife the desire to be a priest. Though he’d had a successful career and was gifted with natural charisma, shortly after entering seminary he began displaying a pale, off-putting piety. It was as if he ceased to be himself and had become the reincarnation of the monsignor he’d served as a grammar school altar boy. A wise spiritual director told him bluntly: “God did not call you to become a PRIEST. God called YOU to be a priest.”
The message was clear. A vocation is no period costume to be slipped on, however awkward or ill fitting. God summons each of us to a holy life in all our uniqueness.
My friend dropped his pious mask and became a much-respected pastor. “He’s the real deal,” people say, meaning they find his faith appealingly authentic and perceptible. This priest took the man he was—his gifts and skills, personality and passion—and allowed these to be fashioned into the ingredients of a singular priesthood.
The saints lead the way in genuineness. Frontier saint Philippine Duchesne was a deeply stubborn woman who offered God her hardheadedness in persisting despite all obstacles. Damien de Veuster was a farm boy who trusted manual labor. It made him a tireless pastor, caregiver, and coffin builder for his ceaselessly dying parish on Molokai. Katharine Drexel had one thing no other saint did: $14 million. She lavished it on those who suffered injustice. Let God make YOU a holy person.
