Fall: Tis the season for contemplation

autumn-walk-edward-pollick.jpgFALL (which is upon us now in northern climes) is a great season to contemplate your life, your faith, your place in the cosmos. Let's start with some help from 20th-century Cistercian monk Fr. Thomas Merton writing in New Seeds for Contemplation:

“To enter into the realm of contemplation, one must in a certain sense die: but this death is in fact the entrance into a higher life. It is a death for the sake of life, which leaves behind all that we can know or treasure as life, as thought, as experience as joy, as being.  . . .  to be born again on a higher level of life.”

Dying to ourselves is not easy, but as Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM reminds each of us in The Art of Letting Go: "Part of us has already said yes, has always said yes. "It is all about letting go. The spiritual life is more about unlearning than learning, because the deepest you already knows and already enjoys (1 John 2:21).

Remember, says Merton, "You were not created for pleasure: you were created for spiritual joy. And if you do not know the difference between pleasure and spiritual joy you have not yet begun to live.”

Mission is the reason the church exists, if we’ve heard Jesus’ command to go, preach, and baptize correctly. Why take the good news to the ends of the earth? Because the good news about God and humanity is meant for a wider audience than the already convinced.. . . Everyone is invited to share the blessing. Read more>>
