We will be people of love and joy
AS WE ENTER THE TRIDUUM, we will spend time meditating on the Seven Last Words of Jesus--as Christ's final sayings on the cross are known. In her brilliant little book, Seven Last Words (Acta, 1998), Alice Camille asks the question, Who will we be if we listen to the lessons of the Last Words of Jesus?. Her answer is a perfect summary of Christian discipleship:
[We will be] people of love and joy, ready to forgive, buoyed by hope. We will honor our families, welcome the outsider, serve Christ in the needs of others. We will take our sacraments of commitment and healing and service seriously. We will stand with those who are suffering and be the presence of Christ for them. We will fight fear and despair, bringing the Good News of the Kingdom everywhere we go, especially where it is least understood. Again and again, we will surrender to the Holy Spirit of God so that it will be no longer we who live buy Christ who lives in us.
The world is in such need of people like this. One holy person is worth all the sermons on holiness we might ever hear. If you have the courage to be that person, the Kingdom comes wherever you are.
