A stunning loss of life in service to church

IN THE PROCESS of hunting down statistics about the worldwide church, I stumbled saintsangelico.gifacross the Fides 2009 statistics on priests, men and women religious, and lay Catholics killed while on mission. The Americas suffered the greatest losses with 23 pastoral workers dying a violent death. Couple that with the news of the men and women in consecrated life who died in Haiti's massive earthquake (see our recent SpritiCitings blog post on the subject), and you get an overwhelming sense of the lives sacrificed for our sakes and the sake of all God's people. I feel compelled to offer thanks to everyone--family, friends, teachers, mentors, parish priests, pastoral ministers, spiritual directors, vocation directors, religious communities and institutes--for helping to shape and enpower these people to be of such sacred service to the church.
